Our artist client wished to convert their existing lean-to kitchen, accompanying minimalist dining area and conservatory to the rear of their distinctive semi-detached house to create a more spacious living area. The rear garden was restricting but offered an opportunity to develop a modern single storey extension that would provide greater integration with the garden, improved access to natural light and that would create a more amenable open plan kitchen, dining and living space.

The building is clad with specially developed Kebony timber rails with generous spacing between. A large sliding screen links the living space with the garden to the north, while windows and doors link the extension to the side garden providing vistas in multiple directions.

The enormously skilled carpenter designed and crafted a superb kitchen with strong references to the external cladding details in a simple but effective manner. It is also worthy of note that the client built much of the extension himself using his attention to detail as an artist to great effect.

That the client now “lives almost exclusively in the new extension” is testimony to the extensive design development and interaction between client and architect resulting in this delightful solution.
