How do we do
what we do?

Architecture is a unique discipline. It is one of the few professions that merges science with art; the tangible with the feeling, the determined with the aesthetic. There is no calculation for art or aesthetics. How a design can make you feel is difficult to define but is equally recognisable and even motivational. Our objective is to understand the clients needs, hopes and vision and translate this into a well-defined design.
Successful architecture is traditionally judged on the ultimate synthesis of three elements, those being the structure, function and beauty of a building. These elements are always carefully considered in our designs to ensure that the building performs correctly; provides spatial arrangements to suit the function; and engenders a sense of wellbeing and pleasure.
To achieve this we develop our designs according to a process that is outlined below.
Our Project Process
Explained
01.
The Brief
A clear brief from our prospective client is essential to define what is needed, and outlines the objectives, timescale and budget. This is a two way process that allows you, the client, and us, the consultant, to get to know each other and understand your requirements, hopes and needs. It is also the part where we can begin to advise what may and may not be possible.
02.
Site Assessment
This may be an existing building or a vacant piece of land. It has an orientation, a topography and a context. It also has neighbours who will be affected by any development, even if it is as simple as they will see it. Every site is different and must be considered on its own merits. At this early stage we would visit the site, take photographs, and gather initial data. This will help us carry out an early assessment of viability, and also determine the other members of the design team. We will determine what survey data is required, and who will need to be consulted, to ensure that we provide an environmentally sound solution, taking account of legislation such as planning and building standards.
03.
Ideation
This is where we bring our design skills to the process. Firstly we need to think about the problem and understand the requirements and the objectives. We articulate our thinking using concept sketches, often freehand with general notation. We share these concepts with the client as part of an iterative process which before the client wishes us to progress with more detail. This is an excellent way to work towards a solution in a cost effective manner and can provide sufficient information to allow a probable cost to be prepared by a quantity surveyor. From this the client can get an early feel for the cost of the project and instruct any variations to suit their budget.
04.
Planning
Once the concept has been agreed, the next stage usually moves toward a planning application. The level of detail required for this depends upon a wide variety of factors and does not necessarily follow the same pattern. Additional information outwith our skillsets may be required to support an application requiring input from engineers, environmentalists and other specialist consultants. We would normally provide guidance on the co-consultants required to help assemble the application package. A well thought through package has a better chance of gaining consent. At this stage we would encourage the client to get a second cost assessment to check on economic viability.
05.
Technical Design
This stage of the works moves us into detailed technical design. This develops the fabric construction, performance, specifications and assembly of all the elements and components that will make up the building. These drawings will have a level of detail that can demonstrate compliance with the building standards and other relevant legislation or guidance. During this phase, other consultants will work with us to design and detail various elements, such as the structure, roads, drainage, heating, ventilation, electrical requirements, landscaping, acoustics and other specialist input as required. Detail is also developed to allow a more accurate cost assessment, the preparation of a bill of quantities and contractual documentation for tendering and contract award.
06.
Construction
After what often feels like an inordinate period of time, we get to the construction phase. Good design takes time. Inviting tenders on limited information is a false economy as it leaves the client open to claims for extra cost from the contractor. Employing the design team to do their job thoroughly and effectively provides a much greater chance of achieving a successful project. During the construction phase the team looks after the client's interests to ensure compliance, build quality and cost control. If we are permitted to do our job properly it will result in good architecture, which in turn equals a happy client!
